Activity 6

1.) A green building refers to a structure that makes use of processes that are more energy efficient, do no pollute, and use as much natural resouces as possible.

2.)

  • Green Building features: Alternative energy use e.g : solar panels
  • Using recycled materials to build buildings.
  • Dual flush toilet systems.
  • Green walls and roofs: provide optimum C02 neutralisation
  • Green tiles: thickness stores heat from minium underfloor heating usage.

Green and Non-Green features in St Albans College

Non-Green feature: This Aircon ventilation system uses a substancial amout of electricity, many new Aicons save alot more electricity than this one does

Green feature: This is a motion sensor that switches the lights on in Knapp Fisher house, this insures that no electricity is wasted when nobody is in the room

Green feature; Energy saving light bulbs use less electricity and there are mirrors behind he light maximizing
 brightness

Green feature:This pool cover keep warmth in the pool so minimal water heaters are needed

Green feature: There was very little pollution during the making of this building

Non-Green feature: These pool heaters are huge and make alot of pollution, you could rather paint the pool a darker colour to absorb the suns heat

Non-Green feature: the water that comes out of the drainage is wasted and could rather be used for irrigation for the premises

Non-Green feature- This heater uses alot of electricity, you could fix this by getting energy efficient heaters

Non-Green feature: These windows are too small, so lighting will always be needed inside, if they were made bigger the lights would not have to on at all times

Green feature: This energy saving panel heater uses minimal electricity

Non-Green feature: This creates noise pollution and a light could be used instead

Non-Green feature: This uses alot of electricity and does not give off much light, mirrirs behind the light would maximise its effect

Non-Green feature:These toilets waste alot of water, and dual flush systems could be installed to prevent this

Conclusion

In St Albans College there are many Green-Building Features. Some are efficient some are not but they are still Green. It is still to be tested whether or not these Green Features impact St Albans College's resource comsumption significantly. St Albans College also has many Non-Green Features. These features consume unnecessary amounts of electricity and water and it is recommended that they be replaced with more environmentally friendly features.

Activity 8

1.) It means promoting the traditions, interests or ideals of Africa. It involves Africans rising against colonial power and achieving independence.
2.)
  •      African Union – 1963
  •      African National Congress – 1912

  • National Congress of West Africa – 1920

3.)     Pan-Africanism is the movement to create better co-operation between Africans.

4.)    Pan-Africanism is the idea that Africans should form a unity, while African Nationalism is a movement for Africans to obtain independence from colonialism.

5.)    They have both fought for the independence from colonial rule and strongly supported the idea of Pan-Africanism, believing in a unity of Africans.

6.)  He was a Jamacian musician. The words speak of an individual wrongfully taken from his home, fighting for his survival (rights) ,how he is treated , how he goes about achieving his liberation. it also abou their struggle to be forced of thier home countries

Activity 6: The German Holocaust

1.) The Holocaust was the extermination/mass genocide of European Jews by the Nazis.
2.) The Nazis believed that the Jews were biologically inferior and a threat to the German people. They wanted to cleanse their country. They wanted to create a pure, Aryan nation. They blamed the Jews for the economic crisis.
3.) Biocotted Jews.  Then stripped Jews of all rights. Then they sent Jews to ghettoes. Then sent to concentration camps. Then the firing squads or special action groups came in and shot Jews. Then they were taken to death camps, because the rate at which they were killing Jews was to slow. The firing squads was also known as Einsatzgrupen.
4.) During World War II, they did not do much, but after the war, they killed all people responsible for the holocaust.

The rise of the Nazi power

1.----------

2. The Nazi party’s political manifesto was designed to gain votes. It was aimed at the “pure breed” Germans and preyed on their fear and hatred of outsiders and gave them a sense of identity. It continued to trigger their bloodlust by showing the most obvious injury to their pride: The Treaty of Versailles.

3. Aryans were pure Germans. They were depicted as tall, blond and blue-eyed. They had to have pure German blood, could not be Jews or Jehovah’s Witnesses, gypsies, disabled or homosexual.

4.----------

5. The Nazi ideologies were brought to the people through school teachers, radio and cinema. People were given a free radio at a stage, which, however, only received the Nazi station, a station that fed propaganda to the people by the boatload. In school, the ideologies were incorporated as part of the curriculum.

Film review

Comment on rural development
The video shows empowering of the people. It gives people in rural communities a chance to promote a bright future for these people in the communities. I agree strongly on what the “Any Way Solid Solutions Corps” is doing and the way they go about doing it. The people of the community shown in the video have a lack or shortage of basic services and thereby live in poverty but are being helped to build a brighter future for them and are being taught how to help themselves.

I think that this is very important due to the fact that this is a sustainable source meaning that it can be carried on for generations and also that it can benefit the community by them being able to develope there village and make it change for the better.

Act 1: Development

Activity 1: Development                                                                                   Henk Vryenhoek

1.)  Development: a process where something is further refined, improved or expanded. Something becomes more adapt, more efficient. Infrastructure is built, technology is bettered.
2.) GNI per person, life expectancy, infant mortality rate, percentage of children receiving secondary education, number of fixed-line and cell phones per 1000 people, GDP,.
3.)

Developed Countries (MEDCs)
Developing Countries (LEDCs)
GNI per person more than $6 000 a year
GNI per person less than $6000 a year
Many industries produce high-value products
Underdeveloped industrial sector
Extensive trading (exports and imports)
Low value exports
High levels of education
Large number of unemployed poor, small number of very wealthy people
Good health care
Health care problems

4. LEDCs-Less Economically Developed Countries
MEDCs-More Economically Developed Countries
5. It is an accurate account of how a country is developing, as it measures poverty, literacy, life expectancy and education. Should it be found that a country is dealing well with all of these aspects (developing them, then it is safe to say that it is developed, seeing as it’s general population are better provided for, its public systems have been improved. These are all indicators of how well a country is able to function, therefore, a developed country is a country that has been “bettered”, and therefore these factors are part of a developed country. More than one indicator used.
5.1 There is a small correlation. Some countries with high rates of female death at birth, are also among the top ten lowest HDI ranking countries.
5.2 As the infant mortality rate is a factor in deciding which countries are developed and which aren’t, some countries with high infant mortality rates are among the top ten lowest ranking HDI countries. Low HDI ranking companies don't have very good access to medical care, or even other things like clean water. These factors make for high health risks, causing death at birth.
5.3 High infant mortality rates, low GNI per person, poor health care. Lack of employment.
5.4 Subsistence farming is when a farming community farms not to trade the products, but to use them for the upkeep of the community, i.e. to feed the community with its own crops/livestock.
5.5 They need to create enough products to be able to export. (Better farm machines, bigger crops)
6. Sustainable Development means that the resources fuelling development are used in such a way that they might be used for a longer period of time, i.e. not exhausted
7.) Goals
Goal1: End extreme poverty and hunger
Goal2: Give primary education to all children
Goal3: Promote equality between men and women, and promote women
Goal4: Reduce child mortality
Goal5: Improve health of pregnant mothers
Goal6: Fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases
Goal7: Make sure the environment I used in a sustainable way
Goal8: Encourage partnerships between governments, businesses and other organisations to work together for development
