Activity 6

1.) A green building refers to a structure that makes use of processes that are more energy efficient, do no pollute, and use as much natural resouces as possible.

2.)

  • Green Building features: Alternative energy use e.g : solar panels
  • Using recycled materials to build buildings.
  • Dual flush toilet systems.
  • Green walls and roofs: provide optimum C02 neutralisation
  • Green tiles: thickness stores heat from minium underfloor heating usage.

Green and Non-Green features in St Albans College

Non-Green feature: This Aircon ventilation system uses a substancial amout of electricity, many new Aicons save alot more electricity than this one does

Green feature: This is a motion sensor that switches the lights on in Knapp Fisher house, this insures that no electricity is wasted when nobody is in the room

Green feature; Energy saving light bulbs use less electricity and there are mirrors behind he light maximizing
 brightness

Green feature:This pool cover keep warmth in the pool so minimal water heaters are needed

Green feature: There was very little pollution during the making of this building

Non-Green feature: These pool heaters are huge and make alot of pollution, you could rather paint the pool a darker colour to absorb the suns heat

Non-Green feature: the water that comes out of the drainage is wasted and could rather be used for irrigation for the premises

Non-Green feature- This heater uses alot of electricity, you could fix this by getting energy efficient heaters

Non-Green feature: These windows are too small, so lighting will always be needed inside, if they were made bigger the lights would not have to on at all times

Green feature: This energy saving panel heater uses minimal electricity

Non-Green feature: This creates noise pollution and a light could be used instead

Non-Green feature: This uses alot of electricity and does not give off much light, mirrirs behind the light would maximise its effect

Non-Green feature:These toilets waste alot of water, and dual flush systems could be installed to prevent this

Conclusion

In St Albans College there are many Green-Building Features. Some are efficient some are not but they are still Green. It is still to be tested whether or not these Green Features impact St Albans College's resource comsumption significantly. St Albans College also has many Non-Green Features. These features consume unnecessary amounts of electricity and water and it is recommended that they be replaced with more environmentally friendly features.
